Guildford Coastal Cruising Club
Talk - Platforms, Pirates and Pornography
What connects Screaming Lord Sutch, Gianni Versace, the actor Ralf Little (Death in Paradise) and Doctor Who? While this sounds like a question from Only Connect, the answer actually lies in East Coast waters - the Maunsell Forts. These are a series of army and navy forts which were built in the second world war, offshore in the North Sea, and played a crucial role in early warnings for enemy air and sea raids. Abandoned after the war, this talk looks at their unique history and the mixed cast of characters involved. The talk examines what is left of them and the unique legacy they have left behind.
Andy is the Chair of Trustees for a Sailability Charity called the Woolverstone Project (www.woolverstoneproject.org.uk). As well as his interesting and enjoyable talk, he will be showing a short film about the Charity, which provides and operates specially adapted boats for the disabled. GCCC will be making a Donation to the Charity as his fee.
This talk will be live in the Papercourt clubhouse. We encourage Members to attend the clubhouse, catch up with friends and enjoy a drink.
For non-attendees, for reasons of distance, or health, this evening's presentation will also be broadcast on Zoom over the internet.
The Zoom link will be sent by separate email to club Members nearer the time; for non members who wish to participate via Zoom, please contact the Membership Secretary by email membership@guildfordsailing.org who will send you the link.
