Oil and Plastic Pollution in our seas: just how much do we know about the extent and the dangers of this blight on the ocean’s waters? Scientifically, how serious are the associated issues? How long might they last for? We know that Dr Simon is an expert on all matters Oceanographic – this will be another interesting, fact-filled and illuminating talk!!


    

A brief Biography: 

  

Dr Simon Boxall is a lecturer and academic in Oceanography at the University of Southampton, based in the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. He studied Oceanography at the University of Liverpool where he focused on the physics of the deep ocean, and moved towards shallow waters and coastlines when he moved to his present post. He's monitored ocean environments worldwide in force 11 gales and in the compete calm, from the air, space and underwater. He has over the years undertaken studies of both open and coastal seas, using both shipborne measurements and remote sensing techniques. His work has included looking at oil spill tracking and observations of climate change. Simon’s other role is in public understanding of science and he regularly delivers public lectures worldwide, he has appeared in over 60 documentaries and regularly features on national and international news stories relating to the ocean environment.


We anticipate a high turn-out for this event which will also be open to local sailing clubs, friends and prospective members.  Online Registration is therefore necessary. Registration to Members will be opened in December 2025, and to "Visitors" on January 1st 2026.

A maximum of 120 places in total will be available.

Registration is free for all GCCC members, and £10 for each "Visitor". Booking/Registration is only via the website. 

GCCC Members

  • GCCC Members and Partner members must each Register individually. Note: for Partner members without an email address, the main Member should first register and then send an email with details of the Partner registration to paularmstrong2023@outlook.com Alternatively they can update their profile to make it easier!
  • GCCC Members can also bring non-member Guests but the Guests must be paid for in advance by the Member and their names listed in the 'Information for Organiser' box.
Non Members
  • Non-members registering must have a unique email address, Register on the website individually, and pay in advance of the event by Monday 2nd February 2026.
  • Pre-payment of £10.00 per person.  Please pre-pay into the Club Bank Account quoting your name as Reference.  All relevant Bank details will become visible during the Registration process. 

No physical tickets will be issued but confirmation emails will be sent, and a list of pre-paid attendees will be checked on entering the club.

Sorry, but because of seating limits, we cannot accept Visitors, or any cash payments, on the evening.
